Futures convert a small margin deposit into large notional exposure. Tick value is the language of P&L; ignore it and your “small” size is not small.
Initial and maintenance margin are exchange/broker requirements — not permission to risk that entire amount. Your desk risk budget should be defined in dollars per day and per trade, then translated into contracts using tick value.
Front-month liquidity eventually migrates. Rolling late can mean wider spreads and awkward fills. Build roll dates into the calendar the same way you build economic events.
Always verify contract specs on the exchange (for example CME education and product pages). Third-party blogs lag; the exchange does not.
